“Victor in a 68’ Camaro S.S.” is a representation of Chicano culture, a Mexican American subculture often associated with a strong sense of community and identity, often tied to urban environments.
I wanted to highlight Chicano Culture to challenge the media's linking of this subculture to gangs. I emphasized car culture by having my character “Victor” in a shiny blue 68’ Camaro S.S. which is tied to Chicanos because they take Pride in their cars, showcasing their creativity, craftsmanship, making them a symbol of cultural expression and identity.
My interest in displaying my culture in a positive light helps to challenge the stigma and stereotypes around Latinos/Hispanics that society tries to force on us.
